Chapter 4

A Passionate Price

28 Years Before Everworld’s Decimation:

Snow continued to descend from above as Krampus and Ariana sat together, waiting for Silvis to contact them. “What made you decide to save me?” asked Ariana.

“I had to. I had been a slave to the evil God for too long, I had to break free, and I couldn’t allow him to claim such a young life.”

“I’ve spent much of the past thousand years thinking back to that day. The day you saved me, the day which changed my life. I witnessed such fierce power as you and your cousin fought. You inspired me, not only saving my life but providing me with the motivation to become who I am now.”

“You enjoy being a demon?”

Ariana smiled, her tail dancing as she spoke. “I can’t imagine not being a demon. It’s who I am, free and in control of my life, and of the lives of others when I wish.” She paused, staring into his eyes. “I know you think your condition a curse, and perhaps it was, but look at yourself now. You're a legend and one of the most powerful entities in this world. You're also majestically handsome.”

“Not as handsome as I once was.”

Her tail shot forward, wrapping itself around his neck as she leaned into him, her mouth meeting his. Krampus found her mouth to feel pleasantly hot as they kissed, warmth spreading between them as snow fell around them. For the first time in a thousand years, Krampus found that he felt excited, happy even. Content?

The many cloaks which covered him disappeared into his pocket dimension, causing his overall mass to shrink by a third. He’d never removed them, until now. He’d been collecting them ever since that day when he’d fallen into an alley weak and disfigured. He’d pulled rubbish around himself then, and it had provided him with a minor sense of security. Now he had no need of that security, he had regained and surpassed his old strength and he had warped his disfigurements, altering them to become appealing rather than hideous.

Ariana moved onto his lap as they continued kissing amidst the snowy tundra. Then he paused as he conjured his vibrating communication crystal, from which emanated Silvis’s voice. “I’ve poured the potion in milk which is sitting on Chris’s table and waiting for him, he is supposed to arrive very soon and I’m currently hiding within a pine tree near the table.”

Their mouths separated as Krampus spoke. “Remain where you are and observe the table, we will approach the factory and make ready for his arrival. Contact us once he enters the room, and tap your crystal when he drinks the milk.”

“Alright,” said Silvis, sounding apprehensive.

Krampus returned the crystal to his pocket dimension as Ariana’s tail withdrew from around his neck. “It’s time,” said Krampus and they stood, stepping down from the sleigh and onto the snow beneath. Miniature red wings grew from Ariana’s back, and Krampus’s hooves glowed blue as he leaped into the air and she flew after him and toward the factory.
